Tooth Extractions

Richmond, Texas

Your natural teeth are designed to last a lifetime with proper care. At M Dental at Aliana, our goal is to help you preserve your healthy smile for as long as possible. Sometimes, that means that our dentist has to remove an unhealthy tooth in an effort to preserve your oral health.

Common Reasons for Tooth Extractions

We'll always do whatever we can and evaluate all treatment options before we recommend extracting a tooth. Your dentist may recommend tooth extraction in these situations:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Tooth infection
  • Poorly positioned teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Trauma
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

Promoting Healing After Tooth Extraction

You'll receive specific instructions from your dentist to promote healing after your tooth extraction. To decrease pain and swelling, you can apply an ice pack to the affected area and take pain medications as prescribed. For the first 24 hours, you'll want to avoid brushing your teeth near the extraction site.

You'll want to avoid drinking from a straw and vigorously rinsing your mouth for at least two days following your tooth extraction. We also recommend that you avoid smoking and consume a diet of mostly soft foods.

These activities could dislodge the blood clot that promotes healing, creating a serious condition called dry socket. A dry socket can occur if a blood clot doesn't form in the space where the tooth was removed. It can also happen if the blood clot dissolves or is dislodged before the extraction site has fully healed. Please call our office if you have any questions or concerns about the healing process after tooth extraction.

Preventing Tooth Extractions

There are many ways you can preserve your oral health and prevent tooth extractions. Maintain a diligent oral health regimen at home by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. You'll also want to prioritize scheduling routine professional exams and cleaning at our office at least twice a year.

Your trusted dental professionals at M Dental at Aliana will carefully monitor your dental health and immediately address any problems early before they can progress to a situation that involves a dental extraction.
